Bruce Wood said Tuesday he decided to leave his post of Kaufman superintendent during the summer.

"My focus was getting school off to a good start and we're off to a good start," he said Tuesday.

Dr. Wood told school board members Monday night that he plans to leave Dec. 31.

He said he will continue to work with Horn, Smith, Wood and Associates Educational Consultants, a firm conducting superintendent searches for school districts.

He also is talking to Texas A&M University-Commerce about teaching. He is a A&M-Commerce graduate and previously taught there as an adjunct professor.

Dr. Wood has been Kaufman superintendent since 2000, but before that he was Terrell superintendent. There they named an intermediate school for him at his retirement.

“As far as a reason is concerned, it is simply a desire on my part to spend a little more time with family, shift to a little slower and less stressful lifestyle, and just generally take a little longer time to "smell the roses,” Dr. Wood said in an e-mail to Kaufman staff members.

He has been in educator for 40 years and received his bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees from what is now Texas A&M University-Commerce.

In his e-mail he thanked the Kaufman faculty and staff for their hard work.

“I honor you for the wonderful job you perform for the students in our community by providing them one of the best public school educational opportunities that can be found,” he said. “The success this district has enjoyed over the past several years is due entirely to a supportive school board, and a dedicated faculty and staff that work unselfishly on doing what is in the best interest of our students.”
