| A packed street dance followed the game |
It’s party time in Kemp – time to cheer, time to dance, time to get in touch with old friends.
Every four years, Kemp calls its graduates home and thousands come.
“There’s a guy who comes from England every four years,” said Melinda Polk, the homecoming committee secretary. That’s the reason we have it every four years. If we had it every year people wouldn’t come back.”
Homecoming began Thursday night with a bonfire attended by almost a thousand people.
Former cheerleaders took the floor for the Friday afternoon pep rally and the homecoming queen was crowned before the game.
Even a loss to Crandall, 37 to 14, couldn’t dampen the festivities. The stadium was full and at times spectators seemed more interested in talking to all friends.
The game was followed by a street dance featuring Texas Express. Hundreds partied downtown following the game.
The official festivities pick up at 2 p.m. Saturday with a downtown parade.
“It’s big. We have classic cars, motorcycles, horses and bands,” Ms. Polk said.
Many classes pick a spot to watch the parade and have impromptu reunions.
And there’s an alumni dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. at the high school cafetorium.
Scattered throughout the weekend are class reunions, some in restaurants, some at country clubs and many in homes. Close to 20 classes, dating back to 1949, have scheduled reunion parties.
They’ll be back in four years.
