Todd Williams said he has been watching several school districts in the area, waiting for the right opening.
When Dr. Bruce Wood announced his retirement as the Kaufman superintendent, Mr. Williams said he pounced on the opportunity.
“It’s a very stable school district. It’s a fine organization they have there,” Mr. Williams said of the Kaufman district. “They have fine people, some I know personally.”
The board unanimously selected Mr. Williams at a Nov. 9 meeting. By state law, the board must wait at least 21 days before signing a contract with Mr. Williams.
“It’s just a good choice,” Dr. Wood said. He said there were 32 candidates for the position and the board interviewed six applicants.
“We had some outstanding people apply,” Dr. Wood said.
No salary has been set but the current superintendent’s salary is $125,700. The Texas Education Agency listed the Martin’s Mill superintendent salary as $69,003 in 2005.
Martin’s Mill is rated recognized by the Texas Education Agency as is the Kaufman district.
Mr. Williams said he plans no immediate changes in the Kaufman district. “In my opinion, there is nothing broke wo there’s no reason to try to fix anything.”
Dr. Wood announced after school started that he will retire at the end of the year. However, he said he’s willing to stay on for several months so that Martin’s Mill will have an opportunity to find a new superintendent.
Mr. Williams has been at Martin’s Mill for more than five years and is pleased with the district. “Martin’s Mills has been a really neat experience with quality people.”
The district has about 500 students in three schools, considerably smaller than the Kaufman district with 3,600 students.
Mr. Williams said moving to a larger district can be overwhelming but “if I didn’t think I have skills equal to the job, I wouldn’t have applied.”
Before going to Martin’s Mill, Mr. Williams, a Crandall High School graduate, worked in Crandall and Scurry-Rosser. He graduated from Baylor University in 1987.
