With the game tied and 9 seconds left on the clock, Jacarri Culverson shot, missed, grabbed the rebound and sent it in to push Kemp ahead of Kaumfan in the regional quarter finals Tuesday night.
Kaufman got off two more shots but missed. The final score was 47-45
“As competitive as that game was, as exciting as that game was, I hated to see a loser in a game like that,” Kemp Coach Tracy Carter said.
He said the Kemp team has gradually moved up in the district over the past four years, last year making it to the quarter final round for the first time.
Still elated from the win, Wednesday afternoon he was putting in practice time while trying to answer phone calls.
The team is looking forward to the Friday game, he said. Kemp faces Princeton from Collin County.
“They beat us by 13 points early in the year,” Coach Carter said, but he’s not worried.
“They were about in mid-season shape and we had just come off football,” he said. His team is much stronger now.
Buses for faculty and students will leave the school about noon for the 2 p.m. game and parents hopefully will be able to get off work to attend. “We should have a fan base,” Coach Carter said.
If the team beats Princeton they will advance to the next round Saturday.
Superintendent Peter Running said he was elated with the win. “Tracy does just such a great job for us. He’s just done great things for our program.”
