Church offered free immunizations

Inez Williams, a school nurse for 25 years, saw that it was getting harder and harder for parents to get shots for their kids.

Not only was there the ever increasing cost of the immunization, there was the cost of taking off work.

“That was the real holdup,” Ms. Williams said.

She retired in 2004 and began working on starting a free immunization clinic. But she didn’t have much luck until she mentioned to church members meeting in her home.

“I mentioned it and the group just went with it,” she said.

Parents filled out forms for free immunizatios.
Since then there have been two clinics, each drawing about 25 for immunizations. A third one Tuesday night drew about that many.

“This is not just for Forney,” Ms. Williams said. “It’s for Crandall, for Kaufman, for everybody.”

The vaccine and supplies are supplied by a grant from Blue Cross-Blue Shield and nurses from the church administer the shots.

Other church members are available to help fill out forms and do other chores. “I’m just there to move chairs around,” joked Ray Clark, a church member and Pct. 2 County Commissioner.

He said the church was pleased with the turnout for the first clinics and hopes to continue them on a regular basis.

“We hoping this will eventually grow into a lot more than we can handle.”
