New theater to open with a splash

There was a long way to go at the new Nova Cinemas Wednesday afternoon.

New Nova theater still under construction
The lobby was full of equipment and a worker behind the concession counter was busy putting up mirror tiles. Some of the theaters still didn’t have all the seats.

“My computers aren’t up and I don’t have any money for the cash drawer,” Manager John Anderson said. “But I am opening tomorrow. We’re going to sell out tomorrow.”

The doors open at 7 p.m. Thursday and Pirates of the Caribbean 3 starts at 8 p.m. with another showing at 9:35 p.m.

Disturbia, Shrek 3 and Spiderman 3 will also be showing.

By summer, the county will have 17 first-run movie screens. The Starplex in Forney, which opened in August 2005, is adding four theaters to its current eight.

Representatives of both companies said they don’t think the competition will hurt.

“I think we offer a lot more than a regular theater,” said Linda Kondraschow, marketing manager for Nova’s parent company.

Nova Cinemas are designed to appeal to families, she said -- near home and low priced. They offer one stop ticketing and concessions.

Tickets are $4 before 6 p.m. After 6 p.m., they are $6 for adults, $5 for students and $4 for children 3 to 11.

Tracy Hoey, with Starplex, said the two theaters draw from different areas and will simply give Kaufman County residents more choices.

Starplex planned to add the four extra theaters from the beginning. The new theaters, opening in June, will add 800 seats to the current 1,200.

Starplex also will be showing Pirates of the Caribbean 3 Thursday night. Ticket prices are $7 for adults and $5 for students, seniors and children.

The Nova Cinemas has five theaters – three with 180 seats each and two with 80 seats each. All have stadium seating and Dolby surround sound.

While the theater will open Thursday, an official grand opening with activities and free movies is planned for June 23.

In the meantime, Nova will offer summer movies for children on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
