Ranking of some Kaufman County schools drop

Many of the Texas Education Agency rankings for Kaufman County schools dropped for the 2006-2007 school year.

None of the county’s schools was ranked exemplary; three were last year. Last year, 23 schools were recognized; this year 19 were recognized.

Mabank is the only recognized district and all its schools are recognized. Last year, Lakeview Elementary School was exemplary.

The Kaufman, Crandall and Kemp school districts dropped from recognized to acceptable. The other districts, including Terrell, remained acceptable.

Kaufman County had no low performing districts or schools.

The TEA primarily bases its rankings on the districts’ scores on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, or TAKS, tests. This year, the state toughened the standards for recognized and acceptable ratings.

In addition to the passing rate for each school and district, "subpopulations" -- whites, blacks, Hispanics and the economically disadvanted -- also must meet the standard.

Crandall just barely lost its recognized ranking by just a few points. To receive a recognized rating 75 percent of the subpopulations and the district overall would have had to pass the tests. In math, only 64 percent of blacks and 74 percent of the economically disadvantaged passed. In science, 73 percent passed.

Crandall superintendent Larry Watson said the district would be working in those particular areas.

"We’re not where we want to be, by any means," Dr. Watson said.

Terrell clung to its acceptable rating, with one group, black students in science, at 39 percent falling below the necessary 40 percent passing rate for that rating.

"We passed," said Terrell Interim Superintendent James Smith. "I would have liked to have some recognized campuses."

Science proved a stumbling block for other districts and campuses.

"I just think the science test is harder," Terrell interim superintendent James Smith said.

Dr. Watson said not only are the science tests difficult they sometimes don't match the way the subject is taught.

For example, students are taught that hawks' beaks are designed to eat meat. But on the test, students are given pictures of birds' heads and asked to pick the one that eats seeds, Dr. Watson said.

Statewide the number of districts and schools rated exemplary decreased, but those rated acceptable rose. Among districts, 20 percent earned exemplary or recognized rankings, down from 29 percent last year. And 75 percent were rated acceptable, up from 66 percent last year.

Among schools, 37 percent were rated exemplary or recognized, down from 43 percent last year and those rated acceptable rose from 45 percent to 51 percent.

Complete results are available at the TEA’s Web site www.tea.state.tx.us/perfreport/account/2007/index.html.
