Mary Clemons is a singer and a survivor of domestic violence so it just seemed natural to put on a show to raise money for the center.
She’d seen Tony Douglas & the Shrimpers at the Canton Civic Center and knew that Susie McEntire Luchsinger, a singer and Reba McEntire’s sister, had written a book about her experiences with domestic violence so she began planning Night at the Opry.
“It just happened,” Ms. Clemons said.
Mr. Douglas, Ms. Luchsinger and Mary Joye headline the concert at 6:30 p.m. Saturday (doors open at 5:30 p.m.) at the Terrell Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door and, for groups of 20 or more, $13 person.
The ministry hopes to raise $10,000.
The ministry started last year and helped about 125 clients. This year they’ve already served more than 200. It serves all of Kaufman County and has a few clients out of the county.
“We’re an advocacy center for domestic violence and sexual assault. We help them find shelters, assist them through the criminal process, help with resumes for jobs – whatever they need,” Ms. Clemons said.
The are a nonprofit organization and have been able to get some state and federal grants to help make ends meet.
Ms. Clemons said ticket sales are going well and she hopes for a sell-out.
Tickets are available at Farmers Insurance, 404 W. Moore Ave., Texas Tax & Payroll, 702 W. Moore Ave. and Elan Hair Studio, 607 N. Rockwall St.
