Dr. Darrell Brown, assistant superintendent/executive director for curriculum, staff development and accountability at the Katy school district near Houston, was named as the lone finalist for Forney superintendent Thursday night.

The school board has been interviewing candidates this week and selected Dr. Brown, 47, after a marathon five-hour closed session.

“With his exceptional background in mathematics and curriculum and experience in a larger, fast-growth district, Dr. Darrell Brown is the ideal candidate to lead Forney ISD to greater levels of student success,” Board President Keith Bell said in a statement.

Dr. Brown was traveling Friday and could not be reached to discuss his new job.

The Katy district has about 50,000 students and Forney about 5,000. Both have experienced rapid growth.

A special Dec. 10 meeting has been called, and Dr. Brown is expected to sign a contract then. A reception for the new superintendent will follow. He likely start his new job in January.

The board interviewed four candidates after a nationwide search.

Dr. Jenny Preston has served as interim superintendent since Mike Smith left the district last year to become superintendent in New Braunfels. She did not apply for the job.

Dr. Brown began his career as a secondary math teacher in Teague where he taught for five years. He worked in Huntsville for eight years as a math teacher and then assistant principal. He joined the Conroe school district as coordinator of mathematics in 1997. He has served in Katy ISD since 2000.

Brown graduated from The University of Texas at Tyler in 1985 and received his masters from Sam Houston State University in 1992. He received his doctorate degree from Texas A&M University in 1997. Dr. Brown and his wife Dana have three children – a son Tyler, 20; daughter Kylie, 14 and daughter Kyndall, 11.
